How Do I Get Started Taking The IDMA Curriculum

We offer an introductory course, Data Management for Insurance Professionals (DMIP), and certification courses which earn you professional designations. Certification as a data manager can bring great value to your career and to your professional development. The importance of data management to our industry cannot be underestimated. IDMA believes that its curriculum can put you on the leading edge in our field.

The focus of the IDMA course curriculum designed to provide students with knowledge and tools essential to a professional insurance data manager. This is a curriculum designed to evolve along with the Data Management discipline. The IDMA curriculum consists of independent study courses. The IDMA non-certification course, Data Management for Insurance Professionals (DMIP), as well as the four IDMA certification courses are updated frequently by the task forces appointed by the IDMA Education Committee.  These self-study courses were created and designed by IDMA and may be taken in any sequence.  There are NO prerequisites. 

Talk to your employer

No doubt your employer will be pleased that you have decided to take the IDMA courses. Most employers offer financial support to help you reach your professional and personal goals using our courses. Talk to your human resources or training director today about the proper procedures to sign up. Ask whether they pay us directly or if they reimburse you. Also, ask whether they have a centralized program for ordering books and registering for exams.

Decide how you want to study

  • Independent Study. This is the most popular method, giving you flexibility in choosing a time to study. It requires the most self-discipline.
     
  • Traditional Classes or Study Groups. These are offered by your employer through a facilitated group.  IDMA publishes facilitators’ guides and Powerpoint slides to course instructors.

Fill out the IDMA Credit Card Purchase Form and fax it to the IDMA office at (201) 469-4019. Credit card orders will also be accepted by phone. Invoice orders can be faxed to (201) 748-1690, or you emailed to team@idma.org. You may also mail to in an order with a personal or company check (payable to IDMA) to IDMA office at 545 Washington Blvd, 19th Floor, Jersey City, NJ 07310. IDMA office is open to serve you Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm eastern time.  Study material orders will be acknowledged when received.

For required outside texts (i.e., study material not published by IDMA), we recommend visiting various online booksellers to comparison shop for the non-IDMA textbooks. Ordering information, generally from the publisher, is included in this document, but it is undeniable that online sellers often have lower prices. HOWEVER, it is essential that you order the correct edition of a book – always check the ISBN number.

Matriculate for your first IDMA certification exam

You must matriculate in the IDMA certification program at the time you register for your initial IDMA examination. The matriculation fee is a one-time fee, and the form has to be submitted only once.  You do not have to re-matriculate for each exam you take.  Also, you do not have to matriculate to take the Data Management for Insurance Professionals (DMIP) examination.

Register for your exam

Purchase of the study material does not automatically register you for the examination. Your exam registration form must be received two weeks prior to the examination window to avoid an additional late charge of $50.  FEES ARE NON REFUNDABLE OR TRANSFERABLE, but you can reschedule your exam ONCE before losing your registration fee.

Exam registration will be acknowledged when received. Your IDMA student id and examination access code (valid for a specific exam and time period) will be provided to you, via email, a week prior to your exam date.
